Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are available in:

All young people up to the age of 19, who are employed, are eligible for an Apprenticeship. Apprenticeships are Government funded schemes aimed at giving young people skills in their chosen vocational area. The length of the course is dependant on the age, chosen NVQ and level of NVQ. This can range from 12 to 26 months.

The training can take place either in the college on day release, at evening classes or may be in the workplace.

Eligibility

There is a guarantee of training for all young people aged 16 – 18 years. There is no minimum requirement where current qualifications are concerned but it is important that the learner is working in a situation which relates to the NVQ that they wish to achieve.

Employment

If aged under 18 or for the first year on an apprenticeship the learner does not need to be paid the National Minimum Wage.

Reviews

As part of the course we are required to review the learner’s progress every 9 – 12 weeks. This entails an assessor coming into the place of work to see the employer and learner, by appointment at a time convenient to all, to discuss the learner’s progress both within the workplace and at college. It also gives all parties an opportunity to identify any further training needs that the college could address. This process serves as a good source of feedback for the learner and ensures that communication between the college and the employer stays open. We encourage employers to become involved with the learner’s courses as much as possible.

Framework

In order to achieve the full Apprenticeship each trainee must achieve a framework of qualifications which will help the young person to demonstrate their ability to perform their job to a set national standard, have additional skills to enhance their performance and have knowledge and understanding that enables them to move between jobs and work places within their chosen field.

These frameworks generally consist of the NVQ, Key Skills at levels that suit the particular job, examinations that are appropriate to the job, Technical Certificates and other qualifications that are best suited to the young person’s job aims and ambitions and also most appropriate to the employer.

When all these are gained and certificated the training centre applies for this additional certificate that demonstrates the full extent of the apprentice’s achievements.
