Key skills are a government initiative and are intended to pinpoint those learners who have not achieved good academic grades at school, thus raising the standard of basic skills within the vocational learning. Key Skills have 4 levels. Level 2 is equivalent to GCSE and level 3 is equivalent to A level. The learner must achieve the level of Key Skill set by the sector council to match the framework of the chosen NVQ.
Key Skills consist of 2 examinations; Application of Number, and Communication, although learners are not required to sit these at level 2 if they have the GCSE equivalent at grade C or above that is relevant to particular exam or level 3 if they have A level, provided they have been achieved within the last 3 years.
Also as part of Key Skills the learner is required to complete a portfolio covering Communication, and Application of Number. This is achieved in the form of a research project which should be work based. In this the learner will be required to plan for, research and present information. However, if it is not appropriate to have a work based project the learner may use a personal project such as buying a car, house or going on holiday.
